On October 28, the Opening Ceremony of Shandong National Center for Applied Mathematics and Forum for the Integrated Development of Mathematics and Industry was held in Jinan. Sun Jiye, vice-governor of Shandong Province, Fan Liming, President of SDU, Ma Zhiming, Yan Jia’an, Guo Lei, Peng Shige, Yuan Yaxiang, Chen Zhiming, Wang Xiaoyun, Zhang Jiping, etc., academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the Forum.

At the meeting, Sun Jiye, Fan Liming and the participating academicians jointly unveiled the nameplate for the Shandong National Center for Applied Mathematics. Sun Jiye and Fan Liming awarded the letters of appointment to Academician Peng Shige, Director of the Center, and Academician Guo Lei, Director of the Academic Committee, and then the two academicians delivered their speeches respectively. Zhang Liansan, Deputy Director of the General Office of Shandong Provincial Government, announced theLetter from the General Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology on Supporting the Construction of the First Batch of National Centers for Applied Mathematics.

In his speech, Sun Jiye made a brief introduction to the innovative initiatives carried out by Shandong Province in recent years to promote the integration of basic research, applied basic research and technological innovation. She said that the Center will play an important role in enhancing the basic scientific research, promoting the substantial integration of mathematics and related fields, improving the ability to serve national strategies and the development strategy for replacing old growth drivers with new ones, and supporting the state scientific and technological innovation system. The participating units should take the major responsibility, carry out in-depth coordination with industries and enterprises based on construction and strengthen talent training and team building. According to him, Shandong will put more emphasis on the allocation of innovative resources including platforms, talents and projects, for supporting the construction of the Center, so that it could be developed into a world-renowned major original innovator as soon as possible.

In his speech, Fan Liming briefly introduced the development of mathematics in Shandong University, saying that the establishment of the Center is an affirmation of achievements made in the discipline of mathematics and a reflection of the high expectations of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shandong Province for its future development potential. She put forward three requirements for the construction and development of the Shandong National Center for Applied Mathematics: first, highlight demand and maintain strategic focus. stick to the “Four Orientations”, and promote the integration of demand chain, innovation chain, industrial chain, talent chain and education chain, and provide more useful solutions for breaking through industry bottleneck. second, promote interdisciplinary integration and enhance development momentum. The Center should vigorously build a platform for cross-research and collaborative innovation, break through the research barriers between on-campus disciplines and off-campus innovation subjects, explore the establishment of a scientific and technological innovation model aimed at technology transformation and application, adhere to “investment from multiple parties and sharing by multiple parties”, and introduce an organization system for interdisciplinary and cross-field research. Third, stick to the introduction and cultivation of talents and bring together innovative intelligence. It should implement the talent mechanism characterized by innovation, inclusiveness, openness and shared development, carry out precise attraction and cultivation of high-end talents and young top-notch talents, and realize a talent cultivation model featuring “cultivation of talents in China + introduction and cultivation of talents overseas” so as to establish an internationally renowned highland for innovative talents in applied mathematics research.

At the meeting, academician Peng Shige signed cooperation agreements with Integrated Research Institute of Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Capital Market Institute of Shanghai Stock Exchange, ZhongTai Securities Co., Ltd., Shandong Data Exchange Co. Ltd., Inspur, Haier and other corporations. Professor Chen Zengjing, Executive Deputy Director of the Center and Dean of the School of Mathematics, signed cooperation agreements with relevant parties on the innovation and transformation base jointly built by SDU, Licheng District government and Jinan Vanke Group.

After the opening ceremony, Academician Peng Shige and Zhang Gong, Director of Huawei 2012 Lab, gave the keynote reports on “Nonlinear Expectations - A Theory for Quantifying Probability and Probabilistic Uncertainty” and “Embrace Uncertainty, a Challenging Problem in Mathematics”.

On the afternoon of the 28th, the Forum for the Integrated Development of Mathematics and Industry was held in Shandong University and Shandong Mansion. At Shandong University, Academician Yan Jia’an gave a report entitled “Imagination, Intuition and Inspiration" and explained the role of imagination, intuition and inspiration in scientific innovation. At Shandong Mansion, Professor Yang Xiaoping of Nanjing University, Gao Chuangui, the person in charge of National Healthcare Big Data (North) Center, Li Lei, Chairman of Jinan Lanjian Junxin Information Technology Co. Ltd., Professor Shi Yufeng, Professor Feng Xinwei and Associate Professor Yang Shuzhen, Vice President of Institute of Finance, Shandong University, and Professor Fu Shujun, School of Mathematics, Shandong University, gave reports entitled “Medical Image Segmentation Based on Geometric Variation”, “Use Applied Mathematics to Deepen Intelligent Services of Healthcare Big Data”, “Practice in Mathematics and Cryptographic Algorithms and Security Chips”, “Technology Advances in Digital Economy and Quantitative Investment”, “Loop Chain Collection and Payment Technology Platform” and “Application of Nonlinear Expectations in VaR Calculation”, respectively. Young scholars and industry representatives conducted academic exchanges in sessions, and discussed the important role of applied mathematics in various industrial fields, which promoted the integration of mathematics and industry.

On the 27th, the Center held a seminar on the development strategy of Shandong National Center for Applied Mathematics at the innovation and transformation base. Ma Zhiming (online), Wen Lan (online), Yan Jia’an, Guo Lei, Peng Shige, Chen Zhiming and Zhang Jiping, academicians of CAS, attended the meeting. The guests visited the newly built Innovation and Transformation Base of Shandong National Center for Applied Mathematics and had in-depth discussions and exchanges on the development strategy of the Center.
