On the morning of May 8, the Work Seminar on Promoting Replacement of Old Growth Drivers with New Ones with Mathematics was held in Central Campus of Shandong University. Fan Liming (President of Shandong University), Peng Shige (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences), Guo Lei (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (NCMIS), CAS), Yan Guiying (Deputy Director of National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (NCMIS), CAS) and Wang Hongguo (Director of Basic Research Division, Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province) attended the meeting.

President Fan Liming first extended warm welcome to Academician Guo Lei, Professor Yan Guiying, Director Wang Hongguo and other guests. Ms. Fan expressed in her speech that, China is attaching great importance to the construction and development of basic sciences. By grasping this valuable historic opportunity, Shandong University should further exert its advantages in mathematics and enhance interdisciplinary cooperation and integration with other sciences. She emphasized that, we shall advance the development of mathematics based on the urgent need of national strategies and the call for replacing old growth drivers with new ones in Shandong Province, dovetail with Shandong's leading industries and improve our capability for serving the strategies of the state and Shandong Province; Next, we will strive to make great breakthroughs in construction of innovation bases through developing comprehensive and systematic strategies and plans, making system and mechanism innovations, and exerting the advantage of provincial-ministry co-construction. Shandong University will adhere to the top-level planning and continue to provide more support for the development of mathematics.

Academician Guo Lei analyzed the current development trend of mathematics and said that, with the implementation and advancement of national innovation-driven development strategy, the development of mathematics and other basic sciences are put as a priority by the state. The wide application of big data and artificial intelligence makes mathematics become increasingly important. Shandong University has a good foundation for mathematics development. Under the leadership of Academician Peng Shige, our mathematics has formed greater academic influence in the field of applied mathematics at home and abroad. It's hoped that we can further consolidate our capability of serving the development of the state and Shandong Province with mathematics, and seize the opportunity of developing innovation bases to build an influential center for applied mathematics at home and abroad.

Academician Peng Shige introduced the development trajectory of School of Mathematics, Shandong University. He pointed out in his speech that, the development of fundamental mathematics of Shandong University has seen fruitful results in the past and the applied mathematics has been further expanded based on previous achievements. Besides, the cooperation between applied mathematics and finance, petroleum, health and other industries has generated good effects, achieving inspiring results. In the future, we will make more efforts in expanding the interdisciplinary scope and carry out more researches on emerging interdisciplinary disciplines at a deeper level.

Professor Chen Zengjing, the dean of School of Mathematics, Shandong University reported the construction and development progress of applied mathematics. Experts present at the meeting conducted extensive and deep changes on such contents as the development opportunities of applied mathematics, how to promote the interdisciplinary research between mathematics and life, medicine, control as well as other disciplines in Shandong University, and the system and mechanism design of new research platforms.

The experts and scholars of School of Mathematics, Zhongtai Securities Institute for Financial Studies, Research Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences and other schools participated in the discussion. Heads of relevant functional departments including Department of Discipline Construction and Development Planning, Personnel Department, Institute of Science and Technology, Service Office for Shandong, etc. attended the meeting.
